Fender Mustang Solid Body Electric Bass Guitar (1972)
Fender Mustang Model Solid Body Electric Bass Guitar (1972), made in Fullerton, California, serial # 358314, sunburst polyester finish, alder body, maple neck with rosewood fingerboard, original grey hard shell case.
This is a super well-preserved Fender Mustang Bass with some light general wear, and in all-original condition. This particular bass was built just after the run of the rather whimsical "Competition" version of the model ended in mid-1972. It has a standard sunburst finish on the body, the older style pearloid pickguard, and a natural neck and headstock. The neck stamp is from October 1972 with pots dated to the 46th week of that year, but the features (especially the snazzy pickguard) are still similar to later 1960s models.
The Mustang Bass was introduced in 1966, Leo Fender's last original design for the company that bore his name. Although intended for students, the instrument is so well-designed and laid out that many professional players have used it extensively. Ideal for players with smaller hands, the Mustang is still one of the best short-scale basses ever designed, well-balanced and comfortable with a very punchy and surprisingly fat sonic signature. This is a superb playing bass and a neat piece of Fender history.
Overall length is 42 1/8 in. (107 cm.), 12 1/4 in. (31.1 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 1 1/2 in. (3.8 cm.) deep. Scale length is 30 in. (762 mm.). Width of nut is 1 5/8 in. (41 mm.).
This is a clean, original bass with just some very light wear and no repairs or alterations. The finish shows small dings and scrapes, the pickguard edges are shrinking up a bit, and the mute foam from the bridge is gone (as are nearly all of them). All else is pretty much as it left Fullerton in late 1972 or early 1973. A great-playing and sounding Mustang Bass, complete in its clean, original Victoria case. Excellent + Condition.
