Composite 5 String Banjo (unlabelled) , c. 1910

Composite 5 String Banjo , c. 1910

Composite Model 5 String Banjo (unlabelled), c. 1910, origin unknown, amber lacquer finish, laminated maple neck and rim, ebony fingerboard.

This interesting and very good sounding banjo appears to be an assemblage of parts, some quite old and some fairly new. The neck is a rather fancy figured maple affair with multiple underlays under the heave ebony fingerboard and headstock veneer and a center ebony laminate. The fingerboard has star-shaped pearl inlay, the topmost mounted upside down! The rim is fairly thin laminated maple with a sheathed tone ring typical of 1910's era banjos. The dowel stick has multiple old holes in it from previous fittings including several from old neck attachment systems and what appears to be a 1910's Farland-style mute. The neck and rim appear finished in a matching amber lacquer of indeterminate vintage, but not as old as the parts themselves. The hooks, tailpiece and geared tuners are of recent vintage. With a fairly long scale neck on a 10" light rim this banjo has a crisp yet still sweet sound. Of unknown parentage but a quality instrument nonetheless, this interesting banjo is a unique old-time machine.

Overall length is 35 1/4 in. (89.5 cm.), 10 in. (25.4 cm.) diameter head, and 2 1/2 in. (6.4 cm.) in depth, measured at side of rim. Scale length is 26 3/4 in. (679 mm.). Width of nut is 1 3/16 in. (30 mm.). This banjo shows wear to the older components but is a very good playing instrument with a nice easy action and pleasantly ringing sound. Excellent - Condition.
