Thornward Flat Top Acoustic Guitar, most likely made by Lyon & Healy , c. 1920
Thornward Model Flat Top Acoustic Guitar, most likely made by Lyon & Healy, c. 1920, made in Chicago, natural finish, Brazilian rosewood back and sides, spruce top; mahogany neck with ebony fingerboard, original black chipboard case.
This beautiful deluxe guitar was sold by Montgomery Wards as their top-of-the-line model in the 1910's, most likely made by Lyon & Healy or one of the other Chicago houses. It is stamped on the backstrip with a "Montgomery Ward" script logo and a block logo "THORNWARD" which is poorly stamper and only partially legible. On the headstock is a peral block engraved "Wm. E. Porath" in script-likely the original owner as some of these top-line guitars appear to be personalized from Wards. With a beautiful Brazilian rosewood back and sides, wide-bordered pearl trimmed top and beautiful engraved fingerboard inlay this is a very fancy guitar. Happily, it also is a very fine playing instrument with a big, deep neck and a very strong tone. A very nice example of a fancy period parlor guitar.
Overall length is 38 in. (96.5 cm.), 13 1/2 in. (34.3 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 4 1/4 in. (10.8 cm.) in depth at side, taken at the end block. Scale length is 24 1/2 in. (622 mm.). Width of nut is 1 13/16 in. (46 mm.). Very fine overall, this is an an excellent sounding guitar, well preserved for its age. There is some wear to the top, and the bridge has been reglued with some attendant light tool marks around the edges. There are old repaired cracks on the rim (near the neck heel) and on the back (near the endblock) glued up tightly but not as neatly as they could have been. The neck has been reset ang the guitar plays very well set up with silk-and-steel strings. The sound is surprizingly deep and rich, one of the finer sounding "parlor' instruments we have had recently. Includes a very nice original semi-hard case. Excellent - Condition.
