Gibson L-12-P Arch Top Acoustic Guitar (1948)

Gibson L-12-P Arch Top Acoustic Guitar (1948)

Gibson L-12-P Model Arch Top Acoustic Guitar (1948), made in Kalamazoo, Michigan, serial # A-2431, black lacquer finish, maple back and sides, spruce top; maple neck with rosewood fingerboard, original brown hard shell case.

This is a beautiful and very rare Gibson from the just post-WWII era-a custom black-finished L-12-P. This is a 17" cutaway guitar that was just under the L-5 in Gibson's line; it features gold-plated hardware on a triple bound body; the maple neck has a single bound rosewood fingerboard with split parallelogram inlay and the headstock is single-bound with a crown inlay. The neck substantial but comfortable, the sound is both incisive with substantial depth. The L-12-P is a very rare guitar to begin with well under 100 shipped between 1948 and 1950 only; this example with its gleaming black finish dates to late 1948 is likely one of a very few ever seen. Bill Haley played an identical guitar for many years; we'd love to say this was his (it wasn't!) but we'll have to settle for it's a dead ringer! This is an exceptional player for many styles and a very unique find.
Overall length is 42 3/8 in. (107.6 cm.), 17 in. (43.2 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 3 3/8 in. (8.6 cm.) in depth, measured at side of rim. Scale length is 25 1/2 in. (648 mm.). Width of nut is 1 3/4 in. (44 mm.). Excellent playing condition; all original hardware and (custom) finish with numerous small dings and scratches, mostly to the top. The finish is cleaner on the back, sides and back of the neck; there is some scuffing to the tip of the heel. Overall the guitar has no major damage or repair; the only alteration is the original pickguard was cut for a DeArmond pickup and has a small retaining screw added beside the fingerboard. An exceptional sounding and playing guitar and one of the sharpest-looking acoustic Gibson's we ever had, with the original HSC.

Excellent - Condition.
