Carte de Visite of Ole Bull, c. 1870's

Carte de Visite, Violinist Ole Bull, 1870's

Carte de Visite of Ole Bull (Shaw's Mammoth Photograph Rooms photographer), c. 1870's, Chicago.

Ole Bornemann Bull (1810-1880), an important superstar of the concert violin in his day, was one of Norway's greatest national composers.

He was a major influence on Edvard Hagerup Grieg (1843-1845), who was also from Bull's hometown, Bergen. In 1852, Bull sponsored the founding of a Norwegian farming colony in Pennsylvania, "New Norway." It failed after only a few years, as most of the settlers headed to the Mid-West to join the larger Scandinavian rural communities in Wisconsin and Michigan.

This photograph was probably taken between 1869 and 1879, the period of Bull's last sojourn in America.
Height is 4 3/8 in. (11.1 cm.), 2 1/2 in. (6.4 cm.) width Excellent Condition.
